- Examines 16th-17th-c. travel accounts, travelers' diaries and guidebooks to pilgrimage sites in northern Europe, Italy and Palestine, exploring types of observations made in these writings regarding sacred sites. Finds that Italian travelers' diaries are especially rich in descriptions of sites. Observes that most of these diaries were not intended for publication and that thus many are still little known. ;
