- Investigates the reciprocal relations (late 18th-20th cs.) between physiognomy, science, art and literature, and studies the diverse uses of physiognomy in the study of art, from connoisseurship to psychoanalytical interpretation. Explores the use of physiognomy by the artist Rodolphe Töpffer, considered the 'father' of comics. Appendix: Italian translation of Rodolphe Töpffer's 'Essai de physiognomonie,' (Genève, 1845). ;
