An historical guidebook to the collections of Roman and later marble and stone sculpture in the Museo lapidario estense, Modena. Includes catalogue entries for 8th-17th-c. funerary slabs and 14th-16th-c. tombs (several incorporating Roman spolia). Presents introductory essays on the 19th-20th-c. history of the museum (founded 1828 by Francesco IV d'Austria d'Este) and formation of the collection (based in part on the Este family's collection). ;
