Abstract :
Explores the imitation of style as a distinctive feature of 16th-c. Flemish and Dutch painting from the Mannerist period, focusing on artists (e.g., Hendrick Goltzius, Cornelis Ketel, Cornelis van Harlem, Karel I van Mander and others) active in Harlem and Amsterdam. Observes that the ability to imitate the manner of other artists was highly praised in contemporary criticism (e.g., by Karel I van Mander, etc.) and became a recurrent criterium in the evaluation of a painter's creative talent. Suggests that in this milieu there was no attempt made to define a set of norms founded upon a single canon of beauty, but instead, Flemish and Dutch Mannerist art expresses a 'propositive metamorphic canon'. ;
