- Describes the invention (in Italy), development (in Germany), and influence of a hydrogen electrical lighter (for lighting candles, etc.) invented late 1770s by Alessandro Volta, one of the first examples of a scientific instrument that became a useful domestic appliance. (The lighter fell out of use by the late 19th-c. because of the introduction of efficient friction matches). ;
