John Dee, Louvain and the origins of English intrument-making

Abstract :
On the astronomical instruments that John Dee acquired in Louvain, brought back to England with him in 1547, and gave to Trinity College, Cambridge. In an autobiographical writing, Dee states that the instruments were designed by Gemma Frisius and made by Gerardus Mercator. Scholars have suggested that the importation of instruments by Dee was pivotal in the development of English instrument-making and mathematical practice, but the author argues that this interpretation probably distorts the historical reality, and examines the existing local manufacture (by British and resident foreign craftsmen) of nautical instruments and timepieces in England. Notes that until the late 16th c. in England as throughout Europe (except for rare exceptions), instruments were usually ordered individually from craftsmen who were not yet organized in permanent, commercial workshops, but who were 'hidden' within other trades. Appendix: catalogue entry for a sundial (1542) by Nicolas Oursiau (a French clock-maker at the court of king Henry VIII) in the Museum of the History of Science, Oxford. ;
