- An archaeological excavation, evaluation, and watching brief was undertaken within the area formerly occupied by Alder, Castle, and Falcon House at 1-6 Aldersgate Street in the City of London. A complex history of the City defences from Roman times to the 17th c. was revealed. An important find was an infilled Saxo-Norman city ditch, with late 11th- and early 12th-c. features cut into it, including a gully containing crucible fragments attesting to silver working and refining. Fragments of the medieval bastion were discovered, and six phases of medieval and post-medieval city ditch dating from the 13th c. to the 17th c. were excavated. Specialist reports discuss animal bone, samian ware, plant remains, leather and small finds, post-Roman pottery, pollen, textiles, crucible analysis, and ceramic building materials. ;
