Abstract :
Discusses two Campbell of Breadalbane boatbuilding 'bills of materials' of 1635 and 1695. The detailed information they contain may enable a future archaeological reconstruction of a west highland galley, or burlinn. Further Mac Gille Chonaill accounts relating to work carried out for the Earl of Argyll are also noted. Locates the Campbell vessels within the socio-economic and historical context of the time. Provides an overview of published work concerning the activities of shipbuilders of conventional ships up to 1700. Appendices describe Campbell woodland resource management in relation to boatbuilding timber, provide short biographical sketches of key individuals, and address income, costs, and values in 17th-c. Argyll. ;
