Abstract :
Suggests two ways in which the slow response to the Reformation in Denmark in 1536 can be explained: a peculiar Danish mentality, and a particular interpretation and use of the teaching of the Catholic church during the centuries preceding the Reformation. Argues that ecclesiastical wall paintings in the late medieval kingdom of Denmark correspond more closely to the oral society of ordinary people that to the literary culture of the clergy. Although there was a pre-Reformation increase in secular imagery and gradual decline in the production of wall-paintings in Danish churches, few, if any, Catholic images were destroyed or concealed. ;
