Abstract :
Surviving pre-Reformation church furniture and fittings in English churches have either been neglected or employed haphazardly as potential indicators of regional attitudes to the Reformation. Mapping of survival of various classes of material culture within the churches of four counties (Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire and Norfolk), has suggested broad regional differences, but definition of intra-regional differences has proved difficult. Ongoing detailed research in selected sample areas has revealed the complex array of influences which have played upon church interiors over the last 450 years. Screens and stained glass are used to explore this more fully. Although certain periods may be defined as of greater influence on survival than others, zealous individuals or local neglect can be as influential as national ordinances or revivalist movements. ;
