Considers the sculpture of the portal as integral to the construction history of the cathedral, begun in 1075, and completed in an unexpected form by the end of the 12th c. Refers to the pilgrims' guide in Codice Calixtino of ca.1130, which describes the basilica and confirms the existence of a preconceived and unified plan of the church. It reaffirms the belief that towards 1128 the works were interrupted because of the incongruity of the ground plan and the site as they approached the western facade. Building eventually continued with changes to the sculptural program in favor of the scheme now known as the Portico de la Gloria. The lintels provide a date of 1188 and the name of Master Matthew who took charge of the completion of the basilica. Outlines the complex iconographic program and discusses the stylistic innovations which show the beginnings of early gothic. ;
