Abstract :
Drawing on related documentary evidence, explores Eton College's 15th-c. cycle of grisaille murals of saints or prophets, presented as fictive statues, and miracles of the Virgin, with Latin inscriptions probably completed in ca.1487. Shows that they were produced in response to a problem caused by architectural and liturgical changes. Some of the subjects chosen, and the innovative use of the Netherlandish style, can be attributed to the probable patron, Bishop Waynflete. The scheme itself was probably planned by the cleric William Whyther using selected texts relating to the dedication of the College to the Assumption of the Virgin. Discrepancies between texts cited and images on the wall provides evidence that artists drew on pre-existing artistic conventions of miracles of the Virgin for at least one scene. The intended audience would have included parishioners and pilgrims for whom the stories would have been familiar. ;
