- Abstract :
- Examines the desire in post-war Germany to create new metaphors for national identity, especially in art and architecture. Literature anticipated a democratic and more feminine principle of inclusivity which was embodied in state architecture through anti-monumental, and literally and metaphorically transparent buildings. Examines three structures which reflect this brief: Hans Schwippert's and Günter Behnisch's Bundeshaus, Bonn (1949, and 1974-1992), and Norman Foster's Reichstag, Berlin (1993-1999). The alignment of the feminine with the democratic was a repudiation of the masculine, fascist, architectural heritage of neo-classicism, but the feminine principle was still conservatively equated with land and nature. ;
