- Examines a group of political cartoons by Tenniel, published in the journal Punch in the 1870s, in which Britannia features in dress and activities contrary to the norm, ranging from respectable middle-class woman to servant. Suggests that the multivocal and contradictory images could be understood as an allegory of the state of the union and/or the state of patriarchy at this time. ;
