Abstract :
Papers on the institutional background of Henry VII's chapel - the cult of the Virgin at Westminster Abbey, the financial aspect of the chapel and its endowment, its liturgy, music and musicians - are followed by papers on the building itself and its contents. Henry VII's intentions for his own perpetual memorial are examined by Margaret Condon, drawing on the evidence of his will: publishes Condon's new edition of this document. Christopher Wilson discusses the functional design and complex development of the chapel which was not carried out quite as planned. Further contributions are on the building history of the Lady chapels (Tim Tatton-Brown), an archaeological survey of the vaults (Andrew Reynolds), the roofs (Julian Munby), the structure of the high vault (Jacques Heyman), the chapel stalls and their 18th-c. re-modelling (Charles Tracy), with an appendix on their carpentry (Julian Munby), the 16th-c. tombs and sculptures (Phillip Lindley), the later monuments (John Physick), the royal connection (Thomas Cocke), and the historic and present restorations (Tim Tatton-Brown, Richard Mortimer, and Donald Buttress). ;
