- Abstract :
- Rodin's wish for a Rodin Room in a major London museum led him to donate to the Victoria and Albert Museum a collection of his work, exhibited in London the previous July in L'Art Francais décoratif contemporain 1800-1885 at Grosvenor House. Archives reveal that the debate over whether or not to accept the sculpture involved a combination of elements: anatagonism towards Rodin remained, although this was no longer an influence; concern over the place accredited with the collecting and displaying of sculpture in the art establishment; and the functions and policies of the Victoria and Albert Museum. With the outbreak of war the gift took on a historico-political dimension which enabled the gift to be accepted in the name of Anglo-French relations and absorbed into the propaganda of the war effort. ;
