Abstract :
Examines hitherto unpublished information on the commission of a rediscovered marble bust of Charles James Fox by Joseph Nollekens, dated 1796 (London, National Portrait Gallery). Identifies it as one of two replicas of a bust commissioned from Nollekens by the 4th Earl Fitzwilliam. The original bust, intended for a temple of political friendship on the grounds of Wentworth Woodhouse, was later given by Fitzwilliam to Catherine the Great (S. Petersburg, Hermitage). The building, dedicated to the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, contained busts of other Whigs and was the inspiration for a similar project at S. Anne's Hill House, Fox's country home. The bust under discussion was given by Earl Fitzwilliam to Mrs Elizabeth Armitstead, mistress and later wife of Fox, and it is the circumstances of the gift and its provenance that add to the importance of this particular bust when set in its historical context. In 1801 Nollekens completed a new bust of Fox commissioned by Francis, 5th Duke of Bedford, for his Temple of Liberty at Woburn Abbey in 1801. The number of replicas of this bust possibly reflects the cult that grew up around Fox. Publishes a painting of Nollekens himself leaning on the first Fox bust, by Lemuel Francis Abbot (London, National Portrait Gallery). ;
