- Explores how an analysis of medieval altarpieces can contribute to a fuller understanding of the social and intellectual history of medieval religious experience. Considers functional and iconographical aspects of altarpieces, and compares altarpieces to other types of devotional imagery. Suggests that a reconsideration of the imagery on altarpieces calls into question the boundaries that have previously been defined separating liturgy and devotion as types of religious activity and experience. ;
