- Argues that the content of national, public museums is intended to illustrate the heritage and political values of that country. Suggests that Western museums derive legitimacy from collecting works by recognised great individuals and from periods in Western history, such as ancient Greece, ancient Rome, and the Renaissance.e their value from their association with older objects in the same collection. ;
