- Discusses Marc Chagall's first trip to Palestine in 1931, which he made for the purpose of collecting material for a series of etched Bible illustrations commissioned by the French dealer Amboise Vollard. Looks at paintings Chagall made while in Jerusalem, including The Wailing Wall (1931; Tel Aviv Museum), The Temple Mount (1931; Chagall Estate), Rachel's Tomb (1931; private collection), Hagoral Synagogue (1931; private collection), Ashkenazi Ha'Ari Synagogue (1931; private collection), and two versions of Interior of the Sephardi Ha'Ari Synagogue (1931; Jerusalem, Israel Musem and 1931; Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum). Discusses the influence of the paintings and Chagall's Palestine trip on his etchings depicting scenes from the Bible, notably in the costumes worn by the figures. ;
