- Abstract :
- Discusses Campeche chairs, which were transplanted from Latin America to the United States. Describes a Campeche chair, probably Mexican (ca.1820; New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art), that was originally owned by James Colles, a merchant who acquired it in New Orleans. Surveys the development of the curule-base chair, of which the Campeche is a modern version, from the x-frame folding stool of ancient Egypt. Includes an appendix featuring correspondence by Thomas Jefferson on the subject of Campeche chairs. ;
