Discusses the dual heritage of Romanticism - the simultaneous destruction of and yearning for the metaphysical. Argues that this legacy created avant-garde art, which replaces the metaphysics that were pushed aside in a technologized world with the religion of art. Presents as examples Marcel Duchamp and Richard Wagner, for whom art is art only after it is no longer art. ;
