On the 16th-18th-c. critical reception and of the ancient architecture of Agrigento, and its consequent 'discovery' by travelers on the Grand Tour. Examines writings by Tommaso Fazello, Camillo Camilliani, Michele Vella, and others. Includes transcriptions of two previously unpublished manuscripts (Agrigento, Biblioteca lucchesiana; MS III.1.E.1: Antichità del magnifico vetusto Agrigento, ca.1766; and MS III.1.E.4: Vari componimenti d'architettura, 1766) by Vella, with his accompanying architectural drawings. ;
