Abstract :
Analyzes a porcelain ewer (Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit) carrying the coat of arms of grand duke Francesco I de' Medici conjoined with those of his wife, Giovanna d'Austria, and deduces a dating of 1574-1578 for the piece. The ewer was sold from the Medici collection in 1772, and was in the collection of the Rothschild family until 2000, when it was purchased by the Detroit Institute of Arts. Notes that in the 1560s Francesco I de' Medici founded a workshop in Florence headed by Bernardo Buontalenti aimed at discovering the secret of porcelain production, previously unknown in Europe. Cites a document of 1575 that records that by this date success had been achieved, and observes that the shop produced porcelain until 1587. The present ewer, rare for its size and quality, is one of only 59 complete pieces of Medici porcelain known. Suggests that it was designed by Buontalenti under Francesco de' Medici's direction, and painted by Flaminio Fontana. Points to the influence on the decoration of imported Chinese porcelain and Italian majolica. ;
