- Explores the role of industrial technology in bringing on the artistic modern age, in which the baroque ideal of skilled artisanship and individual virtuosity gave way to the neoclassical idealization of rigorous technique and the 'logic of the machine'. Observes that this opposition is still in function, and that ultimately it has led to a moral standoff between the consumerist mentality and the fundamental creative values and needs that underlie human existence. ;
