- Explores the political history of maypoles, the fortunes of the particular pole in the Strand, London, and the church of S. Mary-le-Strand, designed by James Gibbs, which arose on this site. Alexander Pope alluded to the pole in the Dunciad, in which he drew attention to the fact that the first of the new 'Queen Anne' churches had been erected on the site. ;
