Abstract :
The reputation of Raphael was at its highest in the 19th c. He was seen as the perfect artist - the epitome of formal clarity and grace. In particular he was admired for his ability to portray loving intimacy, as epitomized by his paintings of the Madonna and Child. This essay explores the relationship between this latter image of the intimate Raphael and the contrasting academic view of him as the model exponent of rhetorical history painting. This tension between the 'private' and the 'public' values ascribed to Raphael's art was explored by a number of 19th-c. painters who portrayed aspects of Raphael's private life, especially his relationship to his lover La Fornarina. These paintings all place Raphael's own art in the context of his domestic experience, seeking to integrate the public and the private. Among these artists can be placed the work of Henry O'Neil, whose three paintings The Pre-Raphaelite (private collection), The Post-Raphaelite (Arbroath, Patrick Allan-Fraser Trust, Hospital Field House), and The Last Moments of Raphael (City of Bristol Museum and Art Gallery), look at Raphael's legacy in the light of the challenge to it created by the Pre-Raphaelite movement. O'Neil's own explorations of the meaning of intimacy in art are tied to his views about the alienating and dehumanizing character of Pre-Raphaelitism itself, in contrast to the work of Raphael. In so doing, O'Neil sought to revive Raphaelesque history painting as a public aesthetic all the more effective because of its power to communicate intimacy. O'Neil used Raphael as a model for the recreation of history painting as historical genre. In The Last Moments of Raphael, O'Neil systematically analyzed this transformation by reconstructing Raphael's own Transfiguration (Rome, Vaticano), as the scene of the artist's death. ;
