Abstract :
Excavations behind properties on the north-east side of Watford High Street revealed a surprisingly low level of activity in the medieval and post-medieval periods. A number of pits of 12th-14th-c. and 17th-18th-c. date were examined, but little contemporary structural evidence was preserved. Small-scale excavations in the grounds of S. Mary's Vicarage, south-west of the High Street, revealed a similar level of activity, but did locate the original southern extent of the graveyard of S. Mary's church. A gazetteer of all previous excavations carried out in Watford High Street area appears at the end of the article. ;
