- Examines the exhibitions in which Rossetti chose to show his early work as a way to better understand his professional aspirations. Posits that by choosing the Free Exhibition Society, Rossetti positioned his paintings as part of a protest against the Royal Academy's control of British art. Considers critical reviews and commentaries. Appendix: catalogue entries and an extract from a review by William Michael Rossetti. Part of a special issue marking the Rossetti retrospective in Liverpool and Amsterdam. ;
