Abstract :
Discusses methodological premises and terminological definitions for analyzing art and material culture from the Byzantine period (6th-early 11th cs.) in Sardinia. Notes that issues of importation, cultural exchange, imitative local production, and the co-existence of various early medieval cultures must all be accounted for when applying the term 'Byzantine'. Since much Byzantine period art in Sardinia survives in fragmentary form and out of context, difficulties in reconstructing chronology, stylistic development, patronage, etc., can impede progress. After these considerations, examines mid-5th-mid-6th-c. imported capitals and 6th-9th-c. imported and locally produced church furnishings and architectural decoration. Also surveys 5th-9th-c. metalwork liturgical objects, and 10th-early 11th-c. epigraphy (in Greek) and church furnishings sculpted with Byzantine and Islamic decorative motifs. Notes that although panel painting from this period does not survive, this is not reason to assume it did not exist in Sardinia. Indeed, there were probably imports from the Byzantine East as well as local imitations. ;
