Studies pre-conquest Mexican painting traditions and their role in the conquest and in subsequent colonial encounters. Within a larger discussion of the European reception of the iconic languages of the New World, analyzes a series of fictional lienzos (painted pictographic canvases) incorporated by Cervantes into the narrative of Persiles. ;
