Revulsion/matter's limits

Abstract :
The psychoanalytic deployment of the concept of disgust - the revulsion that attends certain types or conditions of matter - can be seen in only a small number of instances in modern sculpture, where the intimate connections between 'form' and 'matter' began to fall apart. A series of works from the 1960s by Robert Morris shows a range of fluidity metaphors informed by the psychoanalytical writings of Anton Ehrenzweig, and a Sartrean investigation of 'closeness to matter.' By delving into the phenomenology of liquid matter, Morris opened up the boundaries of the art object and the conventional frames through which it was presented and seen. A further example is the émigré Russian artist Ilya Kabakov's deployment of 'garbage' in his installation works. However, both Morris and Kabakov moved beyond the psychopathology of formlessness to constitute critiques of cultural forms and processes through metaphors of fluidity and material collapse. ;
