- Abstract :
- Identifies the sources for a series of four unpublished designs for Turkish costumes by Gillot (Cambridge, MA, Fogg Art Museum), providing insight into the artist's methods. The two sources are an illustrated 16th-c. travel book by Nicolas de Nicolay (1576, Antwerp) and Jean-Baptiste van Mour's design for an engraving published in Paris in 1714. Posits that the drawings can be dated to ca.1710-1716 and that they may have been for the opera-ballet Europe galante by André Champra with a libretto by Antoine Houdar da La Motte. ;
