Abstract :
Examines the project of the Spanish viceroy Pedro de Toledo for a citadel in Naples on the Colle di S. Martino, which entailed rebuilding the Castel S. Elmo and the (never-executed) fortification of the Certosa di S. Martino. Studies subsequent (mid-late 16th-c.) proposals for the protection of the city, and presents and analyzes a previously unpublished project drawing (1570s; Madrid, Palacio Real, Biblioteca) by Gian Tommaso Scala for a citadel and an extensive walled corridor linking the citadel (built around the Castel S. Elmo) with the port. Though never realized, the idea is reflected in later proposals for the urban defense system of Naples. ;
