- Abstract :
- Interprets Mary Kelly's Love songs exhibition (New York, Postmasters Gallery, ca.fall 2005) as an artistic testament to feminism that at once contributes to a democratic public sphere and resists 'left melancholy,' a Benjaminian term which refers to those who cling to political ideals of the past rather than recognize potential for change. The multi-media installation featured light boxes with feminist slogans and other appropriated activist references, including archival text and photography, as well as re-staged demonstrations in which the artist has included herself. These elements, Deutsche argues, constitute what Alain Badiou terms 'fidelity to the event,' or, a non-nostalgic memory of a prior radicalism (in this case feminism). ;
