- Discusses Gerhard Richter's examinations of the essence of the image in his ongoing project Atlas der Fotos, Collagen und Skizzen and in his cycle 18. Oktober 1977. Argues that, in these works, Richter demonstrates that pictures are processes which do not simply represent or repeat, but which make phenomena visible. Focuses on how Richter's manipulations of extant images reveal his understanding of pictures as producers of knowledge. ;
