Abstract :
Compares the use of perspective and optics in two versions of the painting Schachpartie im Palais Voss (both 1818-1820; Berlin, Alte Nationalgalerie; Hannover, Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum, Landesgalerie) by Johann Erdmann Hummel. Focuses on the artist's use of mirrors and light in his depictions of members of the Berlin chess club of 1803 at a game of chess. Also comments on the placement of chess figures in the paintings. A second part of the article discusses Hummel's drawing (Nationalgalerie Berlin) and documentation of the lost painting Das Schachspiel (1839-1840). ;
