Abstract :
Identifies Bob St. John, an illegitimate son of the 3rd Viscount Bolingbroke, as the probable subject of a white marble portrait bust of a young boy by Nollekens, signed and dated 1796 (San Marino, Huntington Library, Art Gallery and Botanical Gardens). It is likely that it is the bust that formerly stood in a niche in Charles James Fox's Temple of Friendship at S. Anne's Hill House, Chertsey, which was built to a design largely by Thomas Wynn, 1st Lord Newborough. The other busts by Nollekens in the niches were of Henry, 3rd Lord Holland, and a replica of the sculptor's bust of Fox. Research has also uncovered further important information on Nollekens's first bust of Fox. ;
