To loosen the tongue of mute poetry : Giorgione's self-portrait 'as David' as a paragone demonstration

Abstract :
Suggests that Giorgione's lost self-portrait, known from copies and engravings, may have been painted deliberately to set up a paragone to poetry, but because this is stated in purely pictorial terms, this intention has not been recognized by posterity. In depicting himself as David, he may have intended to 'demonstrate' that painting could represent the inner, supposedly unrepresentable quality of virtue. Circumstantial evidence to support this includes signs that Giorgione was influenced by Leonardo and his ideas; other pictures of his circle may be interpreted as referring to the paragone; the sources indicate support for this interpretation; and the interpretation offered for Giorgione's self-portrait is later claimed by Aretino for a work by Titian. ;
