- Reprenant une assertion de Gustave Courbet affirmant qu'il y a toujours dans sa peinture une idée philosophique humanitaire plus ou moins cachée, l'auteur s'interroge sur son oeuvre cherchant à concilier l'antagonisme entre l'homme moral et l'homme physique. Il y a chez Courbet une vison hégélienne de la réalité comme tentative de médiation entre les mondes objectif et subjectif. ;
