- Argues that the evaluation of 20th c. art has been marred by the rhetoric of political radicalism and by the notion that experimentation, invention and novelty are ends in themselves. Posits that 'modern' is not simply a rejection of the past. Concludes that the correct basis for forming a modern collection must be period and quality, not style and attitude. ;
