Abstract :
Critical analysis of digital photography as a medium. Contrasts it with earlier photography; considers the issue of manipulation of the image and other reasons for current resistance to digital photography; and suggests that it may come to be accepted as more apparently true than analog photography. Draws attention to the discourse among photographer, viewer, subject, and culture, and focuses on Timothy O'Sullivan's Home of a Rebel Sharpshooter, Gettysburg, July 1863 as a case of manipulation, problems of authorship, and the consequences of a photograph within a culture. Concludes that the potential truthfulness of the image has not changed with digital photography, but that photography is moving toward being a medium. ;
