Abstract :
Considers the long aesthetic dispute between photographers over the virtues of combination printing methods versus 'straight' or pure printing. The issue first became a major source of contention during the second half of the 19th c. between Henry Peach Robinson and Peter Henry Emerson, and has continued throughout the 20th c. The author notes a strong 20th c. bias for 'straight' printing, as championed by photographers such as Alfred Stieglitz, and the historians Beaumont and Nancy Newhall, but points out that most 'straight' photographers employ artifice and combination printing in some degree to foster the appearance of pure printing. ;
