Abstract :
Accepts, with qualifications, the claim of Raphael's assistants that they carried out his ideas in executing the frescoes of the Sala di Costantino (Rome, Vatican) after his death. Subjects depicted include major events in the life of Constantine, from his vision of the Cross and defeat of Maxentius to his becoming a Christian and surrendering Rome to the papacy. Examines Raphael's purpose and methods and probable visual and literary sources, focusing on the reliefs on the Arch of Constantine (Rome) as a key to his reconstruction of the historical events they depict, in light of texts readily available to him. Considers that the Vision of Constantine and the Battle of the Milvian Bridge reflect Raphael's careful study of the successful military strategy as much as his concern for pictorial and poetic effectiveness. ;
