Abstract :
In those editions of his novel Clarissa over which he had control as printer-author (1748, 1749, 1751 and 1759), Samuel Richardson inserted a folded, engraved sheet of music - a highly unusual nonpictorial 'illustration.' Barchas explores this strangely synthetic moment in the novel by reconstructing parts of the visual, verbal and musical aspects of the page in the material context of 18th c. print culture. She argues that Richardson's reader would have recognized the borrowed features of a variety of printed music in his unconventional engraving. Building upon these visual clues, Richardson used the musical page to highlight Clarissa's attempts to define a feminine politics and to implicate the reader of the novel in that project. ;
