Abstract :
Notes that no texts have been adduced to justify the political interpretation of David (proposed by Hartt regarding Donatello's marble David in the Bargello, Florence, and subsequent works) as a personification of Florence's dedication to republican liberty, moreover that this interpretation does not account for images of David commissioned by the Medici. Draws attention to the psalm 'Benedictus Dominus' in its Hebrew version, and to the commentary of Nicholas of Lyra, which cast light on the traditional significance of David as a personification of universally recognized political virtues and values.iterature and art (e.g. the two bronze Davids by Donatello and Verrocchio, both in the Bargello) in the context of this broader interpretation; also cites Platina's De optimo cive, a dialogue in which Cosimo de' Medici, instructing the young Lorenzo the Magnificent on how to rule Florence, discusses the political significance of David. (Appendix with transcriptions of the psalm). ;
