Abstract :
Although the S. Francis Master's stained glass windows in the Upper Church of S. Francis of Assisi were the first examples of this medium by an Italian artist, they nevertheless had to fit into the window program already begun 20 years earlier by northern workshops. When the S. Francis Master began production in the mid-1270s he was not only faced with the technical problems of working in a new medium; he also had to invent an iconography for scenes that rarely appeared in either his mural or panel paintings. This particular situation forced him to look for older pictorial models. It can be demonstrated through an iconological examination that the S. Francis Master found these pictorial models in the area around Pisa, where he may have received his initial training before finally settling near Assisi in the mid-13th c. ;
