Abstract :
Describes the technique of creating sculptures from interlocked pieces of folded paper, often from found sources such as used office paper or magazine pages, invented by a group of Chinese refugees who arrived in the United States aboard the grounded ship Golden Venture, in 1993. The technique, dubbed qian zhi ('thousand papers') was developed by the refugees while they were being held as prisoners at the York County Prison, Pennsylvania, awaiting hearings in their quest for political asylum. Many of the prisoners have been denied asylum and subsequently deported. ;
