Abstract :
History of the political controversy over the mural cycle by Anton Refregier, depicting scenes from the history of San Francisco, in the Rincon Annex Post Office (San Francisco), commissioned in 1940 by the Treasury Section of Painting and Sculpture. Focuses on the debate by the House Committee on Public Works (Washington, DC) in May 1953 of a motion by California congressman Hubert Scudder that the murals, one of the largest and costliest federal art projects of the New Deal, be destroyed for slandering the pioneers of California and attempting to convert the public to communism. Cites views of attackers and defenders, noting that protests by prominent figures in San Francisco led to the preservation of the murals, which were restored in 1987. ;
