Abstract :
Studies the interaction of scientists and artists in the exploration of the American southwest, in particular the Grand Canyon and surrounding regions, by studying the exploration accounts of John Wesley Powell, and comparing them with photographs, paintings and topographical drawings executed by amateur and professional artists who accompanied him on his travels. Shows how both the geologists and the artists benefitted from and were influenced by each others' expertise in observing the dramatic landscape forms around them. Artists discussed include the photographers E.O. Beaman and Jack Hillers, the painter Thomas Moran, and the geologist and amateur draftsman William Henry Holmes. ;
